This painting depicts a wintry scene of inhabited, rugged Canadian terrain - a subject Banting painted on more than one occasion. His use of greys, whites and muted blues, with the only other colour being a touch of dark red, captures the cold, Canadian winter landscape adeptly. He creates a sense of isolation by the washed out background, and by emphasizing the outlines of the subjects which seem almost coloured in as an afterthought, he further captures the sense of confinement and desolation in the scene.
